On Sunday, Sept.14, 5 p.m., a collaborative concert of the St. Joseph Cathedral Choir and the schola singers of Most Blessed Sacrament Church in Baton Rouge will feature a program of music celebrating the 500th anniversary of the birth of Giovanni Piertuigi da Palestrina (1525-1594). The performance will be held at St. Joseph Cathedral, 412 North St., Baton Rouge. Palestrina was the composer for 11 popes. He was also appointed by Pope Julius III in 1551 as the choir director of St. Peter’s Basilica, a post he held for 30 years. An Italian-themed reception with savories and sweets in the Cathedral Parish Hall will follow the free concert.
