The faithful of the Diocese of Baton Rouge join me in congratulating the Most Reverend James Checchio on being named Coadjutor Archbishop of the Archdiocese of New Orleans by Pope Leo XIV.
The new coadjutor archbishop comes to our state from the Diocese of Metuchen, New Jersey, where he has served as bishop since 2016. Having served as a bishop and rector of the Pontifical North American College in Rome, he is uniquely positioned to help lead the second oldest archdiocese in the United States.
With open hearts and joyful spirit, the clergy and faithful of the Diocese of Baton Rouge join me in welcoming Bishop Checchio to Louisiana and the Province of New Orleans.
