Bishop Duca's Statement Regarding the SSPX

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Diocese of Baton Rouge:
 
As has been publicized internationally, the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X has proceeded with the ordination of four Priests to the order of Bishop without a pontifical mandate and against the will of Pope Leo XIV.  This grave, schismatic act, which has resulted in their excommunication, constitutes a wound to ecclesial communion.  
 
The SSPX has a local site in the Diocese of Baton Rouge – Our Lady of Sorrows – located on North Sherwood Forest Drive in the city of Baton Rouge. The Society is also developing a spiritual and education center in Robert, Louisiana, also in our diocesan confines, named Queen of the Most Holy Rosary.  
 
For several years, and with the encouragement and permissions granted by the late Pope Francis, there has been some collaboration by me with the priests who staff these locations.   This was primarily to ensure the canonical validity of marriage for those requesting marriage in SSPX chapels.  Now, considering the decree of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, delegation to priests of the Society to preside at weddings will no longer be granted.  
 
Of particular importance for the lay faithful is the clarification that accompanied that decree. The Holy See has made clear that the clergy of the Society are now to be regarded as schismatic. This means that, from this day forward, the sacraments they celebrate are illicit and, most significantly for the faithful, the confessions they hear and the marriages at which they preside are considered invalid by the Church.
 
I wish to offer a word of reassurance. Excommunication does not fall upon those who have simply attended these liturgies out of a sincere desire to worship and who have never intended to reject the authority of the Holy Father or the teaching of the Church. Yet, what the Church now asks is straightforward: knowing the situation as it now stands, the faithful of the Catholic Church can no longer take part in the celebration of Mass or in any Sacraments celebrated by a priest of the Society of Saint Pius X, even for purely devotional reasons.  To do so now is to show unity with the teachings of the Society which have been declared to be in contradiction to the teaching of the Roman Catholic Church. 
 
I know, for some, these words are difficult to hear, especially for those who have worshiped, whether regularly or on occasion, at liturgies celebrated by priests of the Society for spiritual reasons and who never affirmed or professed the Society’s contradictory theology.   I instead encourage them to join the community at St. Agnes Catholic Church (749 East Boulevard, Baton Rouge) to celebrate the Traditional Latin Mass on Sundays.  
 
Lay faithful who have formally joined the Third Order of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Pius X or lay faithful who habitually participated in the celebrations of the Priestly Fraternity, formally sharing their doctrinal positions but now aware that future communion with the Catholic Church is not possible, may reconcile with the Church through a profession of faith.  If this is your situation, contact your parish priest or call my office to discuss how this can be accomplished.
 
It is our duty to support the Magisterium of the Church and the authority of the Roman Pontiff. Together, let us work together for the unification of all of Christ’s Church!

Queridos hermanos y hermanas de la Diócesis de Baton Rouge: 

Como se ha difundido internacionalmente, la Fraternidad Sacerdotal de San Pío X ha procedido a la ordenación episcopal de cuatro sacerdotes sin mandato pontificio y en contra de la voluntad del Papa. Este acto grave y cismático, que ha acarreado su excomunión, constituye una herida a la comunión eclesial.

La FSSPX cuenta con una sede local en la Diócesis de Baton Rouge en Nuestra Señora de los Dolores (Our Lady of Sorrows), situada en North Sherwood Forest Drive, en la ciudad de Baton Rouge. La Fraternidad también está desarrollando un centro espiritual y educativo en Robert, Luisiana, y se encuentra también dentro de los límites de nuestra diócesis, denominado Reina del Santísimo Rosario (Queen of The Most Holy Rosary). 
Durante varios años, y con el aliento y los permisos concedidos por el Papa Francisco, he tenido alguna colaboración con los sacerdotes que atienden estos lugares. El objetivo principal era garantizar la validez canónica del matrimonio para quienes solicitaban casarse en las capillas de la FSSPX. Ahora, a la luz del decreto del Dicasterio para la Doctrina de la Fe, ya no se concederá delegación a los sacerdotes de la Fraternidad para presidir matrimonios. 

Resulta de especial importancia para los fieles laicos la aclaración que sustenta dicho decreto. La Santa Sede ha dejado claro que el clero de la Fraternidad debe considerarse ahora cismático. Esto significa que a partir de ahora, los sacramentos que celebran son ilícitos y lo que es más significativo para los fieles, las confesiones que escuchan y los matrimonios que presiden son considerados inválidos por la Iglesia. 

Deseo ofrecer un mensaje tranquilizador. La excomunión no recae sobre quienes simplemente han asistido a estas liturgias movidos por un deseo sincero de adoración y que no han tenido nunca la intención de rechazar la autoridad del Santo Padre o la enseñanza de la Iglesia. Sin embargo, lo que la Iglesia pide ahora es claro: conociendo la situación actual, los fieles de la Iglesia Católica ya no pueden participar en la celebración de la Misa ni en ningún sacramento celebrado por un sacerdote de la Fraternidad Sacerdotal de San Pío X, ni siquiera por motivos puramente devocionales. Si se continua haciendo esto significa ahora mostrar unidad con las enseñanzas de la Sociedad, las cuales han sido declaradas contrarias a la doctrina de la Iglesia Católica Romana. 
 
Sé que, para algunos, estas palabras son difíciles de escuchar, especialmente para aquellos que han participado en el culto, ya sea en una forma regular u ocasional en las liturgias celebradas por los sacerdotes de la Sociedad por motivos espirituales, y que nunca afirmaron ni profesaron la teología contradictoria que tiene dicha Sociedad, pero que más bien, los animo a ustedes a unirse participando con la comunidad de la Iglesia Católica St. Agnes para celebrar la Misa Tradicional en Latín los Domingos, ubicada en la calle 749 East Boulevard, Baton Rouge.

Los fieles laicos que se hayan unido formalmente a la Tercera Orden de la Fraternidad Sacerdotal San Pío X, o aquellos que participaban habitualmente en las celebraciones de esta Fraternidad Sacerdotal compartiendo formalmente sus posturas doctrinales, pero ahora siendo conscientes de que no es posible una futura comunión con la Iglesia Católica, pueden reconciliarse con la Iglesia Católica mediante una profesión de fe. Si esta es su situación, comuníquese con su párroco o llame a mi oficina para hablar sobre cómo llevar a cabo este proceso. 

Es nuestro deber apoyar el Magisterio de la Iglesia y la autoridad del Pontífice Romano. ¡Trabajemos juntos por la unidad de toda la Iglesia de Cristo!
